Executive Function Coaching
Grades 6-12
Executive Function skills are the management systems of the brain which allow us to plan, organize, and monitor how we learn, work, and carry out every day activities. In middle school and high school, the executive functioning demands on an adolescent’s developing brain are challenged as never before, with multiple classes, teacher expectations, and extracurricular activities. My approach is based on the work of Richard Guare and Peg Dawson and their book, Smart But Scattered Teens. Using games, puzzles, and other engaging activities, students will explore the different executive skills and study how they are developed. Next, they will identify their own personal strengths and challenges, and set goals for improvement in their identified areas. Coaching will take place on a twice weekly basis where students will apply strategies to help them study, stay organized, and manage the many responsibilities of middle school and high school life. Ongoing communication with parents will include conferences, suggested readings, and webinars so that they can better support their adolescent’s growth.
